This is a mix media abstract painting; it is taken from a series of three artworks. The complete series includes ‘Figure 2’ and ‘Pushing An Elephant Up The Stairs’. This painting was produced using broad expressionistic gestural marks and lines that resemble the work of 1950s abstract expressionist painter; Franz Kline. I have tried to avoid using any brush work in these paintings using a wide range of abstract expressionistic mark making techniques with a variety of materials such as pen, ink, chalk, charcoal and even spray paint. All three paintings have all been produced by limiting my chosen materials to three base colours in black, white and grey in order to explore the dialogue been tonal and textural qualities of the different materials. I feel this has served to create an intimate and dramatic surface tension within the painting. I have also work heavily to disrupt the flat surface of the wood using sandpaper, knives and other implements to give some added detail and depth to the painting. The title of this work is partly inspired by a song by the nu metal band 'Mudvayne'.
