Fragile Planet –This was created in response to an exhibition title: 'Climate of Consciousness'. For this exhibition I began working with ideas around the frailty of our planet, and in particular the duality of nature and man. I had produced a series of very colourful and engaging paintings for the exhibition, most noticeably my signature piece entitled Diminished. For these works I had been working with the idea of fragility and the destructive nature of our planet. I had used damaging materials in my painting process, such as bleach and spray paint masking. I wanted to echo these notions with this sculpture. I decided to use a jigsaw globe as I felt this was a very direct representation of a fragile planet. I chose to work into the globe with tip-ex, hair spray and acrylics; and, inevitably for anyone who knows me, fire. Once I felt I had suitably created a recognisable image of a damaged planet and fulfilled my urge to burn things, I then began the delicate process of reassembling elements of the jigsaw globe using original pieces and a steal modelling-wire, skeletal-like framework.
