This painting was created for an exhibition entitled 'Climate of Consciousness'. The semi abstract artwork has been painted in a very contemporary method by painting a very realistic image and then obscuring the image by an abstract painting onto of it, smudging the surface and using multiple layers of abstract colour and form. These are techniques that have been employed by modern abstract artists such as Gerhard Richter and Peter Doig. The original subject matter for this artwork was a coral reef or more specifically the subject of coral reef bleaching. Coral reef bleaching is when a reef dies, either through pollution of direct burning from the sun, causing the reef to lose all its vibrant colour and inevitably turning it completely white and into a lifeless ghost like sea sculpture. I worked using household bleach, paint thinning substances and good old fashion white painting to dilute the image of the artwork and thus diminished the vibrant colour in this painting.
